Shuji’s real age may be 71 years old, but due to the fact that he died as a toddler in the world of the living, he still appears to be very young even now. He stands at just a few inches taller than 4 feet tall and has a lean and thin build, weighing only around 70 pounds and appearing to be no older than ten years old.

Messy and blue describes the hair that sits atop his head. The bangs flop down over his forehead and partially over his eyes. His unruly hair extends to different and random lengths, the length of his hair not being consistent in the least. His hair sticks up in some areas as well, and is longer in the back than it is in the front. The shinigami’s bright teal eyes are large and childlike, appearing to be full of innocence. On his cheeks, he has reddish colored markings, though they don’t really mean anything. Also, his expressions are usually ones of a kid who is happy and a bit childish.

Even when he’s wearing the standard shinigami uniform, Shuji likes to add to it by wearing a white cowl around his neck and brown gloves on his hands. He also wears the strap for his zanpakuto’s sheath diagonally across his chest, rather than at his side. When he’s in a gigai in the world of the living, he can generally be seen wearing hats on top of his head, no matter what human clothes he’s wearing at the time.

Shuji is the type of person who appears to almost always be happy, as if he's in a constant state of happiness that no one can push him out of. It's a bit rare for him to be upset, however it isn't unheard of either, just not a very common thing for him.

Because he's always cheerful, the young shinigami is always trying to find the good in everyone else that he meets. He believes that everyone has kindness within themselves, despite how they act.

Sitting still for too long is not an option for this boy. He always has to be doing something, running an errand, running around, something. He even hates the idea of sleeping, simply because that means he's lying in bed somewhere as opposed to doing something fun. Because of his tendency to be hyperactive, it almost seems as if he never runs out of energy, always bouncing around and whatnot.

Despite the fact that Shuji would never want to kill anyone, that doesn't mean he isn't fond of fighting. He actually finds some enjoyment out of fighting, in fact, liking it for many reasons, one of which is because he gets to run around a lot in order to avoid his enemy's attacks.

Also, he is a very stubborn person. If he makes up his mind to do something, he does it. It's hard for him to give up on things, as this personality trait constantly tells him to continue trying, so he doesn't. He won't back down from a fight that he's already a part of for any reason because of this, though he will run if his Captain orders him too, as long as he's confident everything will be okay.

ZANPAKUTO;

YUUMEI

When it is in its unreleased state, Shuji’s zanpakuto has dark blue wrapping around its hilt. The guard on the handle is circular with a swirling design. Nothing else about the weapon is very special, it is a simple looking wakazishi with a blade that is only twenty-four inches long, due to Shuji being so small. The sheath is the same navy blue color, and the rope that is connected to it is worn over the shinigami’s shoulder and across his chest, with the zanpakuto resting against his back.

• Zanpakuto Spirit: The spirit appearance of Shuji’s zanpakutou is that of a weasel. Covered in light brown fur, in the shinigami’s inner world this weasel is around four feet long from the tip of her nose to the last piece of fur on her tail. As such, she’s almost as long as the boy is tall. On her underbelly, her fur is of a lighter, more tan color. Yuumei’s fangs are sharp, but they aren’t the biggest thing to be feared on her body. Instead of having front paws, she has a single large and deadly claw coming out of each arm.
  
  
  
  
  
  Inner World: The appearance of Shuji’s inner world is that of a floating island, hovering over an ocean with a bright sky above. Reflecting his cheerful and bright personality, the world appears to be rather peaceful and calm. The sky tends to be dotted with clouds as plenty of sunlight shines down upon the crystal clear water. On the island itself there is located a small mountain range and a grassy landscape, along with a large river that pours off the side of the floating island into the ocean below.

• Shikai Appearance: Shuji's shikai has an appearance that is very different from how it looked in its unreleased state. His wakazishi turns into two daggers, each with its blade about eight inches long. The blade comes to a point and is shaped as a triangle. The guard is golden and has an odd curved shape with a blue, rounded sapphire stone embedded into both daggers in the center of the guard. Finally, the grip is brown as well as the pommel of both of the daggers.

  • Once Shuji calls upon the name of his zanpakuto and it awakens as his shikai, this ability becomes active. His daggers become capable of draining the spiritual energy from whomever they cut. If he only manages to scratch his opponent, then the energy drain from them is minimal. However, if he manages to wound his enemy more deeply, then the amount of energy that his two daggers drain is greater; the amount of energy drained being equivalent to the severity of the injury he has inflicted. Because this ability is constantly active when his shikai is being used, he can also hold his two daggers out in front of him in a defensive fashion and use them to absorb blasts of energy coming at him, such as cero. Of course, he can't do this if his opponent is far stronger than him, his ability to absorb energy blasts only works correctly if the person he is fighting is weaker than him.
    
    
  • Energy Transfer [Seishou Tensou]: As Shuji attacks with his shikai, the energy he drains from his opponent is continuously being stored up within his two daggers. Thus, when he uses this ability, he connects the blades of both his daggers in some way, linking the two together in order to combine the spiritual energy that they have both drained. Once he does this, he can absorb all the energy that he had previously drained from his opponent and stored within his daggers, giving himself a boost equivalent to however much energy he had accumulated within his shikai. This boost of energy is transferred into his body in a way that it heals whatever injuries have been inflicted upon him. Obviously the extent of the healing process depends on how much energy he had stored within his daggers during the time that he used it.
    
    
  • Energy Release [Seishou Houshutsu]: As Shuji attacks with his shikai, the energy he drains from his opponent is continuously being stored up within his two daggers. Thus, when he uses this ability, he connects the blades of both his daggers in some way, linking the two together in order to combine the spiritual energy that they have both drained. Once he does this, he can release a blast of energy from his blades, directed at his opponent. The energy attack is released in a form that appears similar to a cero. Like with his energy transfer technique, this ability's strength depends upon how much of his opponent's energy he has stored within his daggers up until this point, releasing it all in one attack.

WHAT ABOUT THE PAST?;

Shuji was born a human child in the world of the living. His family was a rather poor one that didn’t earn very much money. Because of this, there was only ever a small amount of food at the table, and the boy’s arrival into the world was unfortunate for them because that meant there was yet another mouth to feed.

When, at the young age of three, Shuji came down with pneumonia, his parents were devastated. They didn’t have the money to bring him to the doctor, and they hoped that he could just get better on his own. However, it turned out only a few days later that the toddler had succumbed to the infection and died. Clearly... their prayers had not been answered...

The child soon found himself wandering the streets as nothing but a soul with a chain hanging out of his chest, not knowing where to go or what to do... or even what was going on. He was lost, and without a family or a home. That is, until a shinigami found him and performed a konso on him.

Before the boy knew it, he was waking up in the Soul Society. Still being only three years old, there wasn’t much that he could do for himself. He had woken up in a district of Rukongai, the 68th, and for a while he simply stayed there, not moving or anything. There wasn’t much he could do, being so young it made it hard for him to walk much distance at all. And where would he go anyway? So he simply stayed there... and would just lie on the ground, hiding behind old boxes and whatever else he found nearby that he could hide behind.

The people on the streets were scary to the young child; he just wanted to stay hidden behind the crates and never come out. Then one day came when an older girl came by and spotted him with his head just barely peeking out from his hiding place. He didn’t understand why back then, but the girl was reminded of her younger brother upon seeing his face and his remembrance had apparently caused her to want to take Shuji with her.

This girl, who was named Sakurazuka Kazai, was just a soul without a purpose wandering around Rukongai. Because she wasn’t a shinigami at the time, the boy didn’t fear her and so he didn’t protest at all upon her taking him with her.

Traveling through the different districts, the one to protect them along the way was always Kazai while Shuji mearly watched from the sidelines. And after some time, the two had finally made it to the academy for shinigami and both took the test in order to find out if they could be enrolled. Surprising as it was, both of them made it in and were accepted as students, even despite Shuji's age and extremely young appearance. The young boy appeared to have unique reiatsu levels which helped him to get in.

Time passed and both students managed to graduate from the school, relatively quickly as a matter of fact. The first division that the two were assigned to was the Soul Society's 6th division, Captained by Shidan Yoritomo.

Shuji's big sister figure, Kazai, advanced very quickly as a shinigami as they remained in the 6th division. He strived to be like her and tried his best to make himself improve fast as well. As she moved up through the ranks, he seemed to do so as well right behind her, doing his best to keep up.

When the time came that the Captain of the 3rd division retired, Kazai immediately replaced her, becoming the new Captain of that division. The two being very close, even since before either of them were a part of the shinigami ranks, she soon chose Shuji to become her Lieutenant. So, he transferred out of the 6th division and has been a part of the 3rd division ever since right alongside her.
